ENGLISH 10 – TERM 2, WEEK 4

I. Characteristics of a Good Documentary or Vlog

A good documentary or vlog should not only be interesting but also truthful, fair, respectful, and responsible.

A quality documentary or vlog should be:

  1. Simple and Brief – The message is clear, direct, and not unnecessarily long.

  2. Precise and Factual – Information is exact, correct, and supported by evidence.

  3. Objective – Information is presented fairly without unfair personal bias.

  4. Fair and Balanced – Different sides of an issue are considered.

  5. Ethical and Respectful – People's privacy, dignity, safety, and rights are protected.

Remember: A video can be powerful and entertaining, but it should never mislead or harm people.

II. Important Things to Check When Evaluating a Documentary or Vlog

When evaluating a documentary or vlog, examine four important aspects:

AspectWhat to Examine
ContentWhat is being said? Are the main idea and details factual?
PresenterWho is saying the information? Is the person credible?
Relevance and TimelinessWhy is the topic important? Is the information appropriate and updated?
FeaturesHow is the information presented through visuals, sounds, narration, and language?

In addition, viewers should examine fairness and ethics.

III. Visual and Audio Elements in Documentaries and Vlogs

Visuals and sounds are important because they help communicate the message of a video.

A. Visual Elements

Visual elements are the images and things viewers can see in a documentary or vlog.

Examples:

  • Photographs

  • Video footage

  • Captions and subtitles

  • Illustrations

  • Charts and graphs

  • Camera shots

  • Animations

B. Audio Elements

Audio elements are the sounds that viewers can hear in a video.

Examples:

  • Narration

  • Background music

  • Interviews

  • Sound effects

  • Voice emphasis

  • Conversations

C. How Do Visuals and Sounds Affect the Audience?

Visuals and sounds can:

  1. Make viewers more interested.

  2. Make viewers feel emotional.

  3. Help viewers understand the message.

  4. Influence how viewers think about a topic.

  5. Emphasize the important ideas of the video.

Important Reminder: Visuals and sounds should help explain the message, not manipulate the audience.

IV. Vulnerable Sectors and Responsible Storytelling

Vulnerable sectors refer to individuals or groups who may be more exposed to risks, discrimination, exploitation, or harm.

Examples of Vulnerable Sectors

  1. Senior citizens

  2. Minors or children

  3. Indigenous groups

  4. People in difficult situations

Why Should Documentary Filmmakers and Vloggers Be Careful When Showing Them?

Because the way they are presented in a video may affect their:

  • Safety

  • Dignity

  • Image

  • Privacy

  • Personal lives

Positive and Negative Effects of Documentaries and Vlogs on Vulnerable People

Positive EffectsNegative Effects
May give them a voiceMay expose private details
Helps people understand their situationMay lead to judgment or criticism
May encourage supportMay cause embarrassment or harm

Remember: A creator must protect the privacy, safety, and dignity of the people featured in a video.

V. Five Important Principles of Quality Journalistic Content

1. Simplicity and Brevity

This means presenting information clearly, directly, and without unnecessary words.

Example:

Wordy Statement:
"There are many things that are very hard for learners nowadays."

Better Statement:
"Many learners struggle with internet access and school supplies."

Explanation: The second statement is shorter, clearer, and easier to understand.

2. Precision and Factuality

Precision means using exact and specific information.

Factuality means presenting information that is true and supported by facts.

Example 1:

Not Precise:
"Many students do not have school supplies."

Better:
"In our class, 8 students said they sometimes lack school supplies."

Example 2:

Not Factual:
"All students are lazy when they do not submit work."

Better:
"Some students do not submit work because of limited internet, lack of materials, or personal responsibilities."

Remember: Avoid making general statements without evidence. Use accurate and specific information.

3. Objectivity

Objectivity means presenting information based on facts rather than personal feelings or unfair judgments.

An objective presentation:

  • Uses facts and evidence.

  • Avoids unfair bias.

  • Considers different viewpoints.

  • Does not automatically blame one person or group.

Example:

Biased Statement:
"All students who fail are lazy."

Objective Statement:
"Some students fail because of different reasons, such as lack of materials, family problems, or difficulty understanding the lesson."

4. Fairness and Balance

Fairness and balance mean presenting an issue without unfairly favoring only one side.

Example:

Unfair/Biased:
"Students who fail are just lazy."

Fair and Balanced:
"Some students experience academic difficulties because of lack of materials, family problems, or difficulty understanding lessons."

Explanation: The balanced statement considers different circumstances that may affect students.

5. Ethics

Ethics means doing what is right, responsible, and respectful when creating or presenting information.

An ethical documentary or vlog:

  • Respects people's privacy.

  • Asks for permission before recording people.

  • Uses respectful language.

  • Avoids misleading editing.

  • Protects vulnerable individuals.

  • Presents information truthfully.

Remember: Being a content creator also means being responsible for how your content affects other people.

VI. Common Problems in Documentaries and Vlogs

A documentary or vlog may receive criticism when it violates important principles.

1. Unfair or Biased Presentation

Example: A vlog only shows the negative side of jeepney drivers without including their reasons or struggles.

Problem: It presents only one side of the issue.

2. Insensitive Language

Example: A video calls poor people "lazy" instead of explaining the real problems they face.

Problem: The language may hurt, insult, or discriminate against people.

3. Recording People Without Consent

Example: A student records a classmate crying and uploads the video without asking permission.

Problem: It violates the person's privacy and right to give permission.

4. Misleading Information

Example: A vlog says, "This medicine can cure all sickness," but provides no proof or reliable source.

Problem: It presents an unsupported claim that may mislead viewers.

5. Causing Harm to People Shown

Example: A documentary shows a child's face and personal problem, causing the child to be judged or bullied online.

Problem: It may expose the child to embarrassment, discrimination, or harm.

How Can Creators Avoid These Problems?

  • Use respectful language.

  • Check facts and sources.

  • Avoid bias.

  • Ask permission from people included in the video.

  • Present the message clearly.

  • Protect people's identities and private information when necessary.

VII. Understanding Ethics, Consent, Brevity, Fairness, and Unambiguous Language

These are important terms to remember when creating a documentary or vlog.

TermMeaning
EthicsDoing what is right and responsible
ConsentPermission to include someone in a video or use their information
BrevityBeing brief or not too long
FairnessTreating all sides properly
UnambiguousClear and not confusing

Example of Consent

Before recording a classmate for a documentary, ask for permission and explain how the recording will be used.

Never assume that someone automatically agrees to be recorded just because they are present.

VIII. Responsible Use of Visuals, Sounds, and Editing

When creating a documentary or vlog, visual and audio elements must support the message.

Consider These Questions:

  1. What visuals will help explain the topic?

  2. What sounds or music will create the appropriate mood?

  3. Will captions or voice emphasis make the message clearer?

  4. Can the visuals or sounds mislead the audience?

  5. Does the editing present the information fairly?

Technical Editing and Animations

Technical editing refers to the editing and arrangement of video elements to improve how information is presented.

Animations are moving visual elements used to explain or emphasize information.

These tools should help viewers understand the topic instead of changing the meaning of the actual information.

Important: Editing should not manipulate footage or make a person appear to say or do something they did not actually say or do.

IX. How to Protect People When Creating a Documentary or Vlog

Before including someone in your video, consider the following:

  1. Do I need their name or personal details?

  2. Should these details appear in the video?

  3. How will I protect their information?

  4. Could my video affect their beliefs or culture?

  5. Could my video cause harm?

Responsible Creator's Actions

A responsible creator should:

  • Ask permission.

  • Explain the purpose of the video.

  • Protect private details.

  • Avoid harmful presentation.

  • Respect beliefs and culture.

  • Use truthful information.

What Should You Avoid When Showing Sensitive Topics?

Avoid:

  • Disrespectful language.

  • Misleading editing.

  • Harmful exposure.

  • Revealing unnecessary personal information.

  • Presenting people in an unfair or embarrassing manner.

X. What Is a Consent Form?

A consent form is a document used to obtain permission from a person before including them in a documentary or vlog.

Information That Should Be Included in a Consent Form

  1. What the documentary or vlog is about.

  2. Why the person will be included.

  3. How the recording or information will be used.

  4. A statement indicating that the person gives permission.

Why Is Consent Important?

People have the right to know how they will be shown and to decide whether they agree to participate.

Sample Consent Statement

"I understand the purpose of this documentary and how my participation or recorded information will be used. I voluntarily give permission to be included in this project."

XI. Finalizing Your Documentary or Vlog

Check whether your output is:

  • Clear and brief.

  • Factual and precise.

  • Fair and balanced.

  • Respectful in language.

  • Ethical in treating people.

  • Supported by evidence.

XII. Annotation: Explaining Your Choices

Annotation means adding notes or explanations to show why you made certain choices in your documentary or vlog.

It helps explain how you applied the principles discussed in the lesson.

Example

Script Line:
"Some learners struggle because they lack school supplies."

Annotation:
"This is factual and respectful because it explains the issue without blaming the learners."

Helpful Sentence Starters for Annotations

  • I used this visual because __________.

  • I used this sound because __________.

  • This line is factual because __________.

  • This part is fair because __________.

  • I need consent here because __________.

  • This avoids harm because __________.

Remember: Your annotations should explain how your choices follow the principles of responsible storytelling.

XIII. Peer Feedback and Evaluation

After completing your output, exchange your work with a classmate and provide helpful comments.

Peer Feedback Guide

Evaluate your classmate's work using the following questions:

  1. Is the main idea clear?

  2. Are the details factual?

  3. Is the language respectful?

  4. Is the output fair and balanced?

  5. Are ethical concerns considered?

  6. Is consent needed?

Helpful Feedback Statements

Ballad of A Mother's Heart by Jose La Villa Tierra

The night was dark, for the moon was young And the stars were asleep and rare; The clouds were thick, yet Youth went out To see his Maiden fair. "Dear One,"  he pleaded as he knelt Before her feet, in tears, "My love is true; why have you kept Me waiting all these years?" The maiden looked at him unmoved, It seemed, and whispered low: "Persistent Youth, you have to prove  By deeds your love is true." "There's not a thing I would not do For you, Beloved,"  said he. "Then go,"  said she,  "to your mother dear  And bring her heart to me." Without another word, Youth left and went to his mother dear. And opened her breast and took her heart. He did not shed a tear! Then back to his Maiden fair he ran, Unmindful of the rain; But his feet slipped and he fell down And loud he groaned with pain! Still in his hand he held the prize That would win his Maiden's hand; And he thought of his mother dear So kind, so swe...
